Teaching First Year Courses

As a response to reaffirmation of accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the School undertook the challenge of revising and re-visioning it’s first year art foundations curriculum. Over many years the faculty developed a new Share Experiences Curriculum. The Shared Experiences Curriculum includes 1000-level art foundations courses, 3000-level interdisciplinary courses, and a 4000-level capstone course that all BFA Art majors take.

The Shared Experience courses are coordinated by faculty member Pete Borsay, borsayp21@ecu.edu

    On-Cycle versus Trailer Sections

These courses are taught using two different approaches:

    • On-cycle sections occur when three sections of one course are scheduled at the same time and day, but are taught by three different instructors in different rooms.
      • During fall semester ART 1011 and 1012 are taught on-cycle.
      • In spring semester ART 1013 and ART 1014 are taught on-cycle.
    • Trailer sections are taught by only one faculty member for the entire semester.
      • During fall semester ART 1013 and ART 1014 are taught as trailer sections.
      • In spring semester ART 1011 and ART 1012 are taught as trailer sections.

    Teaching On-Cycle Sections

    • On-cycle sections are when three sections of the course are scheduled at the same time and day, but in different rooms with different instructors. For example:
      • ART 1011 Sec 001 – Instructor A – Room 125 Jenkins
      • ART 1011 Sec 002 – Instructor B – Room 201 Jenkins
      • ART 1011 Sec 003 – Instructor C – Room 221 Jenkins
      • On-cycle sections rotate approximately every 9 class sessions. For example, Instructor A will teach section 001 students for 9 class sessions, then section 003 students for 9 sessions, then session 002 students for 9 sessions.
      • Instructors for on-cycle sections are assigned as the primary instructor (34%) for only one section. For Instructor A, this is Section 001, for Instructor B Section 002, and for Instructor C Section 003. Each of these three instructors are assigned as additional instructors for the other two sections (33% each). This method allows all three faculty to access the Canvas courses for each sections.
    • Instructors teaching on-cycle sections are expected to maintain open and regular communication with their other team instructors to ensure schedule alignment, address challenges students are facing, monitor attendance, and for grading.

    Attendance

    • Faculty teaching on-cycle section must use Qwickly Attendance in Canvas to record attendance for each section of students they teach. This allows all three instructors to see and track students’ attendance during the semester.

    Canvas

    • Faculty teaching on-cycle sections are required to use Canvas to share syllabi, assignments, and to record project grades.

    Entering Final Grades

    • On-cycle instructors enter final grades for ONLY their original section (primary instructor assignment). For Instructor A, this is ART 1011 Section 001.
      • For on-cycle section, only the primary instructor can submit a grade change for a section.

    Trailer Sections

    • Instructors teaching trailer sections are the only instructor teaching the course and function independently from other instructors.
    • Instructors are must teach to the learning objectives.
    • Trailer section instructors are responsible for entering grades for their section.
    • Trailer section instructors are responsible for syllabus preparation, taking attendance, and utilizing Canvas on their own.
