BFA in Art Concentration Acceptance & Sophomore Portfolio Review

Acceptance into a concentration is based on standards, requirements, and procedures determined by the faculty in the concentration. The purpose of the portfolio review process is to ensure that students have the required knowledge and skills to succeed in intensive upper-level concentration courses. Students may apply to more than one concentration, and are encourage to do so if they have multiple areas of interest. If students are accepted in to more than one concentration they may pursue a dual concentration, however this will likely extend their time at ECU. Students may only apply to the same concentration up to two times. We recommend that if students are not accepted into a concentration they pursue another area/concentration of interest. An unsuccessful portfolio review may be an indication that the student is not well suited to the demands of the discipline.

Requirements for Concentration Acceptance are listed below by concentration. We recommend that students begin discussing the requirements with area faculty (listed below) to ensure that they are working toward the requirements and at the level expected of students in the area.

Candidates in the painting and drawing concentration present their work for review after the completion of 12 semester hours of painting courses, before the midpoint of their fifth painting course. The purpose of the review is to evaluate students’ progress and provide students feedback to successfully complete their coursework and create a cohesive senior exhibition. Students receive guidance to improve the quality and/or quantity of their work. The review is an in-person oral presentation. Students will answer questions regarding conceptual and formal aspects of their work.

Work is evaluated on the following criteria: conceptual development; drawing skills; compositional skill; use of color; technical proficiency; grades; work habits/demonstrated motivation; and communication skills.
