Zach Smith

BFA ’21 Illustration

Biography:
smithZach Smith is from Harrisburg, North Carolina and works to create illustrations that are light and thoughtful. He was introduced to digital illustration three years ago and now works primarily digitally but has occasionally worked with cut paper and acrylic paint. In addition to creating illustrations, he also creates sculptures out of steel, aluminum foil, and various clay materials. He is inspired by shape-based artists and techniques, often using linework sparingly in his images, as well as leaning more toward geometric and stylized rendering techniques. This inspiration has carried him through a few different visual styles and will probably carry him through more in the future. He seeks to create images that tell a story and build enough of a world to create a deeper interest from the viewer. A sense of independence, personal freedom and expression is an important part of his creative process and plays a large role in the composition and overall design of his work. He is interested in architecture, unsolved mysteries and character design, and will occasionally include these interests in his illustrations.
