Francesca Callander

BFA ’20 Animation and Interactive Design

As a 2D animator, I use the concept of simplicity to create intense, emotional narratives through the use of minimal linework and manipulation of organic shapes. As I storyboard for a piece, I will research the meanings behind aspects to be included in a scene. I’m fascinated by scene interpretation through symbolism, as small details can hold several different meanings. A lone light source that illuminates a character’s face in a dramatic angle can determine how a scene will be read by the slightest shift in color. When the audience is immersed in the story, and the animation makes them question the small details, then I believe I have made a truly successful piece.

I precisely wanted the movements of each sea creature to be slowed and flow through the frame. This piece gives the viewer the experience of slowly descending into the depths of the ocean.

I worked on character design and color schemes for characters and backgrounds for this piece. This collaborative project is a short narrative that highlights how friendship can help you overcome the negative impacts of bullying.

Rice Man

A stop motion animation created by Kaitlyn Deguzman, Shayla Simons, Satsuki Tazawa, and myself. I worked on storyboarding for this project in our group. We wanted this piece to be very whimsical, with a significant focus on the rice character and camera angles.
