The Master of Arts in Education with a concentration In Art Education (MAEd in Art Education) is the professional degree in art education. To apply for the program you must hold a current teaching license. This degree does not lead to licensure. The MAEd in Art Education is a one-year or equivalent degree (33-36 s.h.) can can be earned entirely online. As an online student you can enroll in up to three courses (9 s.h.), and can take breaks in your education. However, you must complete your degree within six years of starting.

To apply you will need to have a satisfactory score on the Miller Analogies Test (we recommend) or the Graduate Record Examinations. In addition, you will need to submit a portfolio of your artwork demonstrating your competence in studio art. In addition, your transcripts must demonstrate sufficient undergraduate preparation in art history.

You may apply for admission to the MAEd for fall, spring, or summer enrollment; admission is on a rolling basis.

Admission to the East Carolina University School of Art and Design MAEd degree program is a 2-step process.

STEP ONE — Application

Apply to the MAEd in Art Education through The Graduate School

You will be required to provide the following items to complete the online application:

  • Graduate School online application
  • Application fee
  • Official transcripts
  • 3 letters of reference (References will be contacted via the Graduate School to submit their letters electronically)
  • Image list for your portfolio of 20 works that includes title, medium, size, and date for each piece work
  • A statement of purpose that articulates why you are seeking a Master of Fine Arts Degree. We want to know about your conceptual and research interests, historical and contemporary visual influences, and professional goals.
  • Resume with a link to your website
  • MAT or GRE scores
  • Link to your portfolio on Google Drive

STEP TWO — Portfolio Upload via Google Drive

Next you need to share your digital portfolio with the School of Art and Design through Google Drive.

  • Go to drive.google.com and log in to your account.
  • Create a folder named GradAppECU_YourName to upload your portfolio.
  • Upload individual files. Files must be PDFs for texts, JPEGs for still images, MP4 for moving images, and MP3 for audio-only work.
  • After uploading your portfolio, go to the Share setting for the folder. You may do this by clicking on the folder from the top menu (My Drive > GradAppECU_YourName) and selecting Share option.
  • In Share dialog box, enter eos@ecu.edu in the address field, then set the Share option to Can view, and click Send. Google will ask you to confirm the invitation, and click Yes.
  • Go to the Share setting for the folder again, and copy its shareable link shown in the dialog box. Paste this Link in the ECU online application form’s Image Portfolio Supplemental Item.
  • Your online portfolio is now submitted. A receipt confirmation will be sent to you within 2 days.

Important Note to Residents Outside of North Carolina:

Admission of applicants outside the State of North Carolina to an online degree, certificate or individual online course offered by East Carolina University, is dependent on ECU’s ability to secure authorization from the applicant’s state of residence, if such authorization is required.

East Carolina University delivers online education programs and courses throughout the United States and internationally. All programs have been approved by the University of North Carolina General Administration. Many states have prescribed an authorization process for out-of-state institutions delivering online programs to its state residents to ensure quality post-secondary education, to preserve the integrity of an academic degree, and to instill greater consumer protection for its student citizens.

East Carolina University has taken steps to protect its students and programs through nationwide compliance by: participating in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA); obtaining authorization, approval, exemptions and waivers; or confirming that East Carolina University can operate without such authorization because the state’s laws do not pertain to a public institution, to an accredited institution, or to the ECU’s activities in that state.

On November 14, 2016, East Carolina University was approved by to participate in NC-SARA which is a voluntary, regional/national approach to state oversight of postsecondary distance education. Institutions that participate in SARA are authorized to provide online education to students from all SARA member states. States and institutions that choose to become members of or participate in SARA operate under a set of policies and standards overseen by SARA and administered by the four nationally recognized regional higher education compacts.
